SUMMARY:"Understanding Spatial Inequality: Framing the Problem Using Quantitative Evidence" Kenya Covington (UCLA)
DESCRIPTION:“Understanding Spatial Inequality: Framing the Problem Using Quantitative Evidence” \nKenya Covington (UCLA) \nDecember 2\, 2019 \n12:00pm-2:00pm | Bunche Hall 6275 \nSpatial inequality focuses on the spatial dimensions of social inequality; it is concerned with the uneven geographic distribution of both undesirable and desirable features of communities that determine the well-being of families and communities overall. To address spatial inequality problems quantitative evidence is key to more precisely describe what may be an abstract concept to society at large. Using effective problem definition strategies are critical as one attempts to garner support for policy action. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n“Putting History to Work: A Workshop on History and Policy” is a monthly LCHP series designed to be a forum for skills-building and presentation of research in the intersecting fields of history and policy. This workshop will answer a variety of practical questions for historians who want to make their research relevant to policy. How do historians address present-day problems in their work? What sorts of professional knowledge is needed? The workshop is principally intended for graduate students and faculty interested in applying historical knowledge to contemporary problems. It will feature a range of experts offering insight on a wide array of skills.

Professor Soll works closely with the Greek government\, the European Commission\, the Portuguese government\, world financial leaders\, and other stakeholders\, and he has become a close working friend of the Prime Minister of Spain and of former prime ministers of the UK. \nA best-seller\, particularly in Asia\, The Reckoning took the author into the heart of European politics\, but also into the center of world finance and financial reform. This talk will explain how history can be used as an effective language for political and financial reform.

SUMMARY:Black History in Dark Times: Reflections of an Historian Featuring Peter James Hudson
DESCRIPTION:“Black History in Dark Times: Reflections of an Historian” \nHistorian in Society Lecture Series \nPeter James Hudson\, UCLA Departments of African American Studies and History \nFirst published in 1938 as the dark clouds of fascism amassed over Europe\,\nCLR James’ classic study The Black Jacobins: Toussaint L’Ouverture and the San\nDomingo Revolution\, described the efforts of enslaved Africans to found a Black\nRepublic – Haiti – at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Yet it was written\nwith another historical struggle on the horizon: the coming decolonization of\nAfrica. Given the multiple historical coordinates of book\, The Black Jacobins –\nand CLR James himself – offers us any number of lessons on the writing of\nhistory and the historian in society. This talk will explore some of these lessons\,\nespecially as they pertain to the writing of Black history during our current perilous times.
