LCHP Researchers Publish Op-Ed in San Francisco Chronicle

UCLA graduate students Sammy Feldblum and John Schmidt were recently published an op-ed in the San Francisco Chronicle, titled Ronald Reagan’s ghost runs the UC system. Expect strikes until that changes. Their paper reviews the history of non-tenured faculty in the UC system and explores the role of non-tenured faculty in the UC’s future. In their own words, “Nearly a million more people teach in universities (now) than in 1969, but the number of those with tenure has remained roughly constant.” As the UC system continues to bring in more students with its “UC 2030” plan, the role of non-tenured faculty and the need to maintain strong learning environments is becoming all the more relevant.
