LCHP Workshop Series

Putting History to Work: Learning Policy Skills for Historians

“How to Write a White Paper: The Research Process at the UCLA Labor Center”

Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Project Director, and Saba Waheed, Research Director at the UCLA Labor Center

The first meeting of new LCHP workshop series “Putting History to Work: Learning Policy Skills for Historians” took place on October 29, 2018. The workshop was led by two visitors from the UCLA Labor Center, Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Project Director, and Saba Waheed, Research Director. Shadduck-Hernández and Waheed presented an overview of the research process at the Labor Center. The presenters detailed the method that the Labor Center use to plan, develop, and produce white papers and policy briefs.

The presentation placed special emphasis on the concept of research justice. Research justice, according to Shadduck-Hernández and Waheed, requires trained experts not only to incorporate the voices and perspectives of community members in their research and writing, but to consider these perspectives of value equal to other forms of evidence and expertise.
