LCHP Hosts CalMatter’s CEO Neil Chase In A Conversation About Using Historical Analysis in Journalism
On Tuesday Nov. 9th the UCLA Luskin Center for History and Policy hosted the CEO of CalMatters, Neil Chase in a conversation about journalism as the “first draft of history.” This was an opportunity for students interested in journalism to engage with a seasoned journalist on his experience of the world and trends of news media in the past and present.
The conversation included a discussion on how journalists do – and do not – utilize historical analysis in their work, how reporting has evolved in the age of social media, and the concept of “unbiased” news. Mr. Chase also described some of the strategies CalMatters uses to maintain its non-partisan credibility.
Neil Chase is the Chief Executive Officer of CalMatters. He was formerly Executive Editor at The Mercury News and the East Bay Times and has worked as a journalist at the San Francisco Examiner, Arizona Republic, CBS MarketWatch and The New York Times.
